Why is this translation needed?

In our opinion, Designing Games by Tynan Sylvester explores fundamental principles of game-making — principles that never change and universal — in the best way possible. These are things that must be considered before drafting mechanics, selecting technology, or setting up development processes. Game design framework offered by Sylvester matches best our views on product creation and fiction.

Since 2013, when the book was published, there have been no signs that O’Reilly plan Russian translation of the book. Also, no forms of translations exist at the moment. Considering the book publishing crisis in Russia, aggravated by the pandemics, it’s unlikely that the official translation will ever see the world.

Fair Use Disclaimer. What does “reworked” mean?

According to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, one cannot simply publish a translation because it’s a derivative work. The exclusive copyright for the book is held by O’Reilly Media, and even though T. Sylvester endorses the translation, they aren’t able to grant the permission.

However, a critical work that researches the source material, provides critical commentary, and serves for educational purposes falls under Fair Use.

In order to comply with Fair Use rules, this translation does a number of original contributions:

  • Locates and provides links to academic and literary sources used by the author.
  • Comments on cultural references made, adapting it to the Russian audience.
  • Helps to implement Sylvester’s framework in practice by linking to other sources, approaches and frameworks.

How does translation happen?

We translate it chapter by chapter, publishing each section as a separate page on Designing Games translation hub. As soon as we’ll set up an email engine, subscribers will be notified about new chapters via email.

We do it in our free time. While the translation by itself is not that difficult, research-and-commentary part necessary for publication takes a lot of effort. So, it’s highly appreciated if you support us.

Updates and estimates are published at our Russian Telegram channel.
